How to Play the Imposter Game: Full Rules & Variants

The imposter game (the word-guessing party game all over TikTok, also called "Who is the Spy") takes two minutes to learn and ruins friendships in five. Here's the complete ruleset, plus the variants our own groups keep coming back to. Searching for "how to play impostor"? Same game - both spellings are used, and the rules below cover it played in real life, no app needed.

The basic rules

  1. Gather 3-10 players and one phone. Open the game, pick player count and a category.
  2. Pass the phone around. Each player privately reveals their secret word, memorizes it, hides it, and passes on. Everyone gets the same word - except the imposter(s), who get a slightly different one.
  3. Clue round: Starting from Player 1, each person says one short clue about their word out loud. Never say the word itself. ("It's yellow" - not "It's a banana.")
  4. Discuss. Whose clue didn't fit? Who looked nervous? Who just repeated what someone else said?
  5. Vote. On the count of three, everyone points at a suspect. The player with the most votes is out - reveal whether they were the imposter.

Common questions

How many players do we need? Three minimum, but 5-8 is the sweet spot. Below four, the vote is too easy to rig; above ten, rounds drag.

What if the imposter guesses the word from clues? That's the game working as intended - a good imposter who pieces it together and clutches the vote deserves the win.

How do you play the imposter word game in real life? All you need is one phone: start a round, pass it around so each player peeks at their secret word, then give clues out loud and vote. No cards, no app installs - the rules above are the full game.
